HOUSE OF MEDICI

The Medici family found their niche in selling wool and banking. Both of these fields proved to be very profitable. Cosim Medici became leader of the city state of Florence in 1434 the Medici family would rule until 1737. The Medici family was most famous for sponsoring artists. They would pay artists commission for works of art. The Medici family supported famous artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, and Leonardo de Vinci. They also supported scientists such as Galileo. Much of the Medici families wealth came from their bank, the largest in Europe. Some interesting facts are that four medicines were popes, and Galileo named four moons of Jupiter after Medici children.
