KASHERING THE KITCHEN

The priciples

  • TASTE IS TRANSFERRED TO FOOD THROUGH HEAT.
  • THIS TASTE IS IMPOTENT AFTER 24 HOURS.
  • WE ARE STRICT TO ASSUME THAT UTENSILS SHOULDN'T BE USED EVEN AFTER 24 HOURS.

WHAT CAN'T YOU KASHER

  • China, pottery, earthenware, cement, concrete, and enameled pots may not be kashered for Pesach.
  • The Ashkenazic custom is to not kasher glass or crystal, with the exception of glass stovetops.
  • There is a difference of opinion as to whether plastic and other synthetic materials are included.

  • Make sure to clean the rubber
  • Some have the custom of covering shelves (leave air space for circulation)

  • What can be kashered? Check the list.
  • RRB recommends: Cover everything.

  • Self clean is awesome. No need to wait 24 hours. (Works thru Libbun - incineration.)
  • If not: Clean well, wait 24 hours, heat to the highest temperature for 1 hour.

  • Turn on the highest setting

Erev Pesach on Shabbos

The Most complicated day of the year

The General RULE:

  • For almost everything, treat Thursday Night / Friday as if it was Erev Pesach
  • (With a few exceptions)

Searching For Chametz

  • On Thursday Night, search for Chametz WITH a bracha
  • Nightfall is 8:09 PM
  • Don't do anything until after the search!

BURNING CHAMETZ

  • Friday morning before 12:12 PM
  • But no Kol Chamira (you'll do that tomorrow)

Sale of Chametz

  • Taking place on Friday Morning 11:30 AM
  • Last time to get your form in - Thursday afternoon, 25 March 5:00pm.

Shabbos Meals

  • Keep Challah / Pita aside from the sale, burning and nulifying
  • All other food should be Kosher L'Pesach
  • Eat the bread on disposables, or make kiddush / hamotzi outside with intent to continue indoors.

meal Timing

  • All Chametz must be finished by 10:59 AM, then say Kol Chaimra
  • You can also use Egg Matzah (if that is your custom). Finish before 10:59 AM as well.
  • Shaloshudis: Either rely on other foods, or make a third Hamotzi after a 30 minute break.

If you're leaving for Pesach

  • Bedika on the Night before you leave. Bitul at the regular times.
  • Check your hotel room at night with a bracha. In the day, without.
