  • Jewish people are like the older brother
  • Gentiles are like the younger brother
  • The Father welcomes both and is overjoyed when the younger returns to Him

  • Paul is a former Jew and he addresses Jews & Gentiles alike
  • He has anguish for his fellow bretheren as we do for our non-believing friends/family

Context

  • Jews seek to establish relationship to God thru works
  • Paul shows us our works will do no good whatsoever
  • Yet he shows us that there is hope for the Jew still

Questions

In verses 1-13, what are the two different types of righteousness that Paul describes? How? Are they related?

In verses 5-13, what kind of righteousness did Moses have? Was he saved even though he lived before Jesus?

Paul's implication is that when faith is real and genuine, a believer will show it and confess through action and words. Does your life reflect this?

In verses 14-17, what is our participation and role in preaching the gospel? Why does God involve us in this process of salvation?

In v.17 Paul says "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." And the word is near you..mouth..heart." Is the "word" active or passive in salvation? How?
