Mass and Weight

What be the difference??

MASS

  • The amount of matter in an object
  • MATTER is anything that takes up space and has mass. Matter does not have to be visible– even air is matter.
  • SI units - g, Kg, mg

WEIGHT

  • WEIGHT is the measure of the gravitational force that is affecting a particular object.
  • Weight depends on gravity, which can change depending on where an object is located

If you were to travel to other planets, your weight would change, even though you would still be the same size and have the same mass

MASS vs WEIGHT

  • Mass does not change based on location
  • Different tools are used to measure these values
  • Different Units are used to express these values

Gravity

  • force that exists between any two objects that have mass
  • always attractive and pulls objects toward each other.
  • The force of gravity depends on the mass of each object and the distance between them
