SYRIAN CIVIL WAR AND REFUGEE CRISIS

TUNISIA AND ARAB SPRING

  • A strong man keeps his fruit stand to earn money.
  • Man lights himself on fire to be noticed and dies eventually for the crowd to be convinced the government was wrong.
  • This was the Arab Spring a time when countries rose up against their leaders.

BASHAR AL ASSAD

  • Dictator of Syria
  • Country thought that we was had a chance for great hope.
  • Once the people protested he opens fire which surprised the whole country.

FIRST CAUSE OF SYRIAN WAR

  • The French put enemies next to each other after WWI.
  • Creating tension between different beliefs.

SECOND CAUSE

  • Assad taking away the people's human rights and creating a regime.
  • Making people protest while they open fire at the people.

THIRD AND FINAL CAUSE

  • Unfair treatment towards different cultures mostly Sunni Muslims.
  • Sunni Muslims are very hated since their religion is the highest population in Syria.

WHO IS FIGHTING IN THE WAR?

  • Assads army
  • Free Syrian army (rebels)
  • Al-Qaeda
  • Hezbullah terrorist groups
  • ISIS

WHAT ROLE DOES AMERICA PLAY?

  • Funding the rebels for military weapons
  • Making sure they won't start a war with Russia.

WHAT MAKES IT COMPLICATED?

  • It's hard to know their sending the money to the rebels and not terrorists or different groups.

WHY DOES THE UN NOT STEP IN?

  • Allies with Assad, Russia and China.
  • Russia air strikes rebels and are worried by war with Russia.

  • Russia and China have no veto against U.S.A, Great Britain and France.
  • Allies with Assad.

  • 320,000 people dead
  • 3 million refugees displaced.
