PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Electrochemistry is the study of chemical processes that cause electrons to move. This movement of electrons is called electricity, which can be generated by movements of electrons from one element to another in a reaction known as an oxidation-reduction ("redox") reaction.

There are many applications of this in every day life. Batteries, control of corrosion, metallurgy and electrolysis are just a few examples of the applications of electrochemistry.

How is a basic battery set-up?:
You need to get batteries, then 8 or 6 gauge cables. You will also need 12 gauge wire, get your connectors and your fuses. In the picture it shows how to connect it all.

The battery operates through electrochemical reactions called oxidation and reduction. These reactions involve the exchange of electrons between chemical species. If a chemical species loses one or more electrons, this is called oxidation. The opposite process, the gain of electrons, is called reduction.

Corrosion is a process through which metals in manufactured states return to their natural oxidation states. This process is a reduction-oxidation reaction in which the metal is being oxidized by its surroundings, often the oxygen in air. This reaction is both spontaneous and electrochemically favored. Corrosion is essentially the creation of voltaic, or galvanic, cells where the metal in question acts as an anode and generally deteriorates or loses functional stability. In case of sealed lead acid battery corrosion happens when electrolyte makes its way out to battery terminals through any leaks or joints.

This is another picture with corrosion but this time it is on a metal anchor.

electrolysis is a method of using a direct electric current (DC) to drive an otherwise non-spontaneous chemical reaction. Electrolysis is commercially highly important as a stage in the separation of elements from naturally occurring sources such as ores using an electrolytic cell.

Electrolysis uses:
Astronauts get the oxygen they need through electrolysis. Electrolysis can be used to separate water molecules into their base elements. Also many people undergo electrolysis for hair removal.
