CAUSES OF HYPOTHERMIA

  • #1. Respiration/Breathing
  • #2. Evaporation/Sweating
  • #3. Radiation/Body Heat
  • #4. Convection/Wind Chill
  • #5. Conduction/Touching Cold Things
  • Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature is below 35*C
  • Severe hypothermia occurs when body temperature is at 32*C and under

SYMPTOMS

  • Symptoms of severe hypothermia: slowing heart rate and breathing, dilated pupils, coma.
  • Person with hypothermia may appear dead

PREVENTION

  • Head is major source of heat loss, so wear scarfs, toques, etc.
  • Insulate body with appropriate clothing
  • Have good wind-proof shell layer jacket

REDUCING HYPOTHERMIA

  • Warm drinks (hot chocolate)
  • Do not give direct heat to person with hypothermia
  • Take off any wet clothing
  • Wrap person in warm blankets

MATERIALS

  • Tinder: paper, leaves, grass, bark, resin, shredded sticks
  • Kindling: small dry sticks/twigs, dead branches on undersides of trees
  • Fuel: dead tree branches. Add large pieces of wood to your fire after it's burning, and make sure wood is as dry as possible

SUPERVISION

  • NEVER leave your fire unattended
  • Make sure your fire is completely out before leaving to prevent forest fires
