PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Deforestation happened in Vancouver before it was developed. Even though we are not currently cutting down huge forests like the rainforest in Brazil, when developments are built in Vancouver, trees still need to be cut. This picture is taken from an old tree, that at one point was surrounded by many many other trees. It shows the past and the present, and is in a part of Vancouver that is developing very quickly because of its access to the skytrain.

I love trees, and I love climbing them. The more we have studied deforestation, I've realized that even small acts like climbing these trees can be harmful. This is one of my favourite trees in Vancouver because it has a mini hammock in it and a beautiful view of the city. However, every time I go back and climb the tree I realize how smooth the branches are from being climbed on. I am sure this tree will not live as full of a life as intended because of the negative human impact many people have had on it.

This is a picture of deforestation that occurred in Brazil, in the Amazon Rainforest between 1996 and 2012. Deforestation occurs in this area primarily for cattle ranching, but also for agriculture such as soy production.

Reforestation

A way that I am personally working to positively impact deforestation is by planting my own garden. When deforestation occurs, the land is often used for agriculture. I often go to the grocery store and buy fruits and vegetables that have been grown on land that has been deforested in other countries. The more that I can grow my own food, the less I will be contributing to the global deforestation that is occurring .
