Despite these findings, states continue to place students based on their race, zip code and disability level rather than their needs.

Article Recommendations

Article Recommendations

  • The US Dept of Ed maintains records of student placement
  • Funding opportunities should: support training for personnel to provide effective services and;
  • help states and LEAs to build capacity for inclusive practices

Connection to my experiences and inclusive programming today:
My Special Education experience has all been in a rural setting with mostly white students who do not have extensive needs So, I have not seen the findings from this article in action. However, I have seen districts that take a "one-size-fits-all" approach toward student placement. These decisions need to be based on student needs, NOT on what is convenient for the LEA.

I believe that having Federal guidance, funding, and support in creating more inclusive environments for students would benefit students, schools, and classrooms.
