Why would misinformation destroy a civilization?

This essential question is societal.

The article "The Danger of Fake News in Inflaming or Suppressing Social Conflict" suggests the meaning of misinformation and fake news, and how the fake news destroy a society. Fake news—news articles that are intentionally and verifiably false designed to manipulate people’s perceptions of reality—has been used to influence politics and promote advertising. But it has also become a method to stir up and intensify social conflict.

People with malicious intent can use fake news to make American national conflicts more intense. Politically motivated fake news came from multiple sources: foreign governments, such as the Russian Internet Research Agency; American political operatives who used illegitimately-acquired Facebook data from the Cambridge Analytica firm to convince social media users how to vote; and from politically motivated groups, such as the alt-right, alt-left, and conspiracy theorists. Despite their different goals, they spread similar fake news stories.

Fake news poses a serious threat to American democracy. During the 2016 election, fake news was more prevalent on social media than genuine news and it’s unclear whether interventions from Facebook and Twitter, and the U.S. government will change this. Over 62% of Americans receive their news from social media. This is makes a large portion of the public vulnerable because of the way fake news spreads in social media (as we discuss in our section on the spread of fake news by people and by bots). Regardless who posts it, fake news intentionally undermines trust in the news and the government.

The Party seeks to control everything - past, present, and future. Its first effort toward attaining that goal is to control and manipulate every source of information, rewriting and modifying the content of all historical records and other documentary evidence for its own gain.
Winston is a man actively engaged in spreading false media—editing news reports to reflect a new truth and creating entire people to validate baseless claims. In today’s world, he could easily be posting fake-news articles to Facebook. Despite this, he believes, like many of us, that the truth can simply exist by itself. Sometime, somewhere, and somehow, truth must prevail.
However, the country did not develop well by changing the information. Instead, the people are suffering from those misinformation, the society stopped developing as well. Although the Party seeks to control everything by manipulating every source of information, ultimately it is unable to achieve the goal.
