A few thoughts

  • Testing with one user is better than testing with none.
  • Test early and often.
  • Test with the kind of user that will use your site.
  • Testing is iterative.

Research indicates that the first three users will encounter nearly all the significant problems.

Testing

  • "Get it" testing - show them, do they get it?
  • Key task testing - ask them to do a task, watch them do it
  • Use the script...

Typical Problems

  • Users are unclear on the concept
  • The words they are looking for aren't there
  • There's too much going on

Then...

  • Review the results right away
  • What can and should you do? What do you have the time and money to do?

Triage

  • Avoid kayak problems
  • Resist the impulse to add things
  • Take "new feature" suggestions with a grain of salt
  • Grab the low hanging fruit
