OCD

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.(www.nimh.nih.gov)

  • People with OCD may have symptoms of obsessions, compulsions, or both
  • Obsessions are repeated thoughts, urges, or mental images that cause anxiety
  • Compulsions are repetitive behaviors that a person feels the urge to do in response to an obsessive thought

SYMPTOMS

  • Fear of germs or contamination
  • Aggressive thoughts towards others or self
  • Having things symmetrical or in a perfect order

  • Excessive cleaning and/or handwashing
  • Ordering and arranging things in a particular, precise way
  • Repeatedly checking on things
  • Compulsive counting

TREATMENTS

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder treatment may not result in a cure, but it can help bring symptoms under control so that they don't rule your daily life
  • The two main treatments for OCD are psychotherapy and medications, often both

COST

  • The cost of therapy is like the cost of a house or car repair, or tv or vacation
  • If you spend your money well it should not cost too much money to get help

  • The whole families affected when one person has OCD
  • Family members are important to keep he or she going to therapy and getting the right treatment

SCHOOL

  • Some kids seem lazy or uninterested because they are always distracted
  • They are focused or nagging urges and terrifying thoughts
