By: Sara Gentry

History & Background

  • Teaching has been relevant pretty much forever, but in the earlier days, boys would mostly just go to school & the girls woulf stay home & learn how to be a housewife & mother.
  • School originated from Ancient Rome where they used the Byzantine Empire established a schooling system through the primary level.

History & Background Continued

  • Technology has really changed the education word. With schools getting more & more online classes, teachers are slowly starting to die down. But if they are teaching an online course, they have to make sure everything is online at all times & it can become stressful quite fast.

Anne Sullivan

  • One of the most famous teachers is Anne Sullivan. She was the mentor & lifelong companion of Helen Keller. She probably had one of the hardest teaching jobs out there because it isnt an easy task to teach someone who is deaf & blind without even having proper training in that.

Education & Requirements

  • Teachers need to have completed a 4 year degree.
  • Having a license isn't always necessary. You only need to have one if you didn't take the necessary education courses in your college career.

College Major & College Near Me

  • 2 good majors to go into are Early Childhood Education & Elementary Education.
  • The college i'm going to, Oakland Michigan University, has a very good teaching program.

Pathway to Success

  • Usually, teachers will start at the bottom of the chain & move their way up. They will most likely start as a substitute for a while until they become a permanent teacher.
  • It will mostly likely take about 2-3 years after college to find a teaching position.

Skills Needed

  • To be a teacher for the younger audience, you definitely need to be very patient & have a more animated personality so the kids feel more comfortable & excited to learn.
  • Patience is for sure key because there will be really rough days & you always need to keep your head up & just be patient with the situation.

Opportunities to Move UP

  • When working in the elementary schools, there could always be a chance of becoming principle & moving your way up from that if that's something you would be interested in. There's not much opportunities to move up in the teacher world unless you work at a very nice & high paying school district.

Daily Tasks

  • Teach & instruct.
  • Access students & evalute work.
  • Control the classroom.
  • Attend workshops & meetings.
  • Have parent teacher meetings if necessary.
  • Keep grade book up to date.
  • Make lesson plans.

Job Fitting Into Big Picture

  • Without teachers, there wouldn't be schools.
  • Teachers make a difference, are lifelong learners, enjoy a lot of interpersonal relationships & have lots of vacation time!

  • The enviroment is in either a public or private elementary school facility.

Reporting

  • The teacher will report to the administraton or school board in any serious situation.
  • Students will usually report to their teacher, who will take care of it themselves or take it to the principle, or they will just go straight to the principle.

Income for a Teacher

  • Lowest: $36,040
  • Median: $54,120
  • Highest: $83,910
  • Teachers get paid annually, not on the hourly bases

Pros & Cons

  • Con: Working with children can be difficult at time because well, they're kids. They don't always stay on task & it might be very hard to be patient some days.
  • Pro: You get to teach the next generation & develop student-teacher relationships that could last a lifetime. There's nothing better than seeing a child succeed.

Job Market in Michigan & US

  • Michigan is always in need of elementary teachers who specialize in Foreign Language, Early Childhood, Math, English, & Special Education.
  • There are critical teacher shortages in Florida, Virginia, Texas, Nevada & California.

Economy Affects

  • Budget cuts.
  • Teacher lay-offs.
  • Hiring freezes.
  • Salary freezes.

Future Changes

  • If technology continues to grow in such ways, there won't be a need for teachers anymore. Everything will either be on the computer or taught in class by a robot. This is a very real fear since technology concurrs all.

How Teachers Help The Community

  • Teachers teach the whole youth of society that will soon be running the society. Without school or teachers, there would be a lot of dumb people running the country & protecting us everyday.

Would This Job be Right for Me?

  • I believe this could be something i would honestly be good at. I love kids & teaching a whole new generation of kids sounds intriguing to me. I love kids & have a passion for teaching.
