Honor Cultures

  • greater sensitivity to insults and demand a serious response
  • Being on edge is a virtue.
  • Not responding is shameful.
  • Taking matters in your own hands is respected (avoid authorities)
  • Often violent reprisals

In an honor culture, your rep is important. Protecting it is seen as an act of bravery.

Dignity Culture

  • Aren’t as sensitive to insults.
  • “Sticks and stones”
  • Being over-reactive is embarrassing.
  • Seek third party to resolve serious issues.

In a dignity culture, everyone has worth; and therefore, this worth can’t be taken away by a slight. Over-reaction is seen as a lack of confidence.

Victimhood Culture

  • An honour culture values rep and using violence to sustain it.
  • A dignity culture values control and a governing body dealing with issues.
  • A victimhood culture uses aspects of both.

Victimhood Culture 2

  • Complaint to a third party - dignity
  • Advertised oppression - could be some honour, but not the weakness. It’s the reputation but what is valued is different.
  • Tolerance and negotiation avoided - honour
