PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE SCARLET LETTER

BY NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE GRACE PERIOD 2

What is a sinner?

A sinner is a person who commits a sin. The Greek word for “sinner” is missing the mark,
symbolizing that a sinner is missing God’s mark. In general people think sinner means evil, immoral
or wicked and cursed, but the Bible tells us that everyone is a sinner. Through the original act of
Adam and Eve, inheriting a sinful nature. Sinners are slaves to sin (John 8:34). Where they are on
the road to death and destruction. Only those who believe in Jesus Christ have their sins forgiven
and granted heaven. The Bible gives you various states of sinners: People who do not live according
to the laws of God, and those who were unfaithful to Israel covenant with God and instead pursue
with gods, transgressors who break the law and heathens. As sinners we all miss the mark, and we
stand guilty as charged, for none is good, not one. Only through Jesus Christ we are saved and
forgiven.

Meaning

The Scarlet Letter A is letter that Hester Prynne forced to wear for it symbolizes the sin she committed (Adultery). The letter A is represented on the novel as shame, and a form of punishment for Hester. The red color indicates the blood stain Hester must carry throughout her life.

In the article ‘I am a sinner,’ the man said: We read in Proverbs 28:13: “He who conceals his sins prospers not, but he who confesses and forsakes them obtains mercy.” It might be easy to turn a blind eye to our sins, but we can’t shield them from God. You can see this in The young minister who concealed his own sin, not prospering but harming himself.

REFLECTION

Although the Scarlet Letter symbolizes a sin, it becomes a powerful identity to Hester Prynne. The Letter “A” becomes to stand out as “able.” Here identity was to help others and care for those who do not have anything (poor and sick). That is where “able” was then changed as what defines the letter. People started to admire her and her character and was well respected throughout the chapters of the novel.

In Conclusion

No one is born perfect except for Jesus Christ who was brought to this world by the Holy Spirit interceding with Mary. Being a sinner is one thing, changing is another. Sin doesn’t necessarily play a part of believing in Christ in order to be forgiven for some people’s view, like Hester Prynne. Never in the novel it mentions that she repented before the eyes of God. But rather she changed through Pearl and the Scarlet Letter. But sin will have consequences, even though you repented, you must escape the aftermath behind what you have done. It is like a man who robbed the bank, although he realized what he done was against the law, he still had to go to prison. But the fact still remains true, that sin will always be forgiven when you realize what you have done, it will change you to a better person like Hester or a worse person like Doctor. Chillingworth.
