USING THE CALMING SPACE IN THE MEDIA CENTER

The media center is a quiet place for students to check out books, study, and create.

Having a calm body and mind helps me stay safe at the media center. If I am calm, I am happy and safe. This makes other people happy and safe as well.

If I find myself feeling anxious, frustrated, sad, angry, overwhelmed, or scared, I can take a break in the calming space or use the sensory kit.

From the sensory kit, I can use noise canceling head-phones, sunglasses, fidgets, and other supports while I remain with my class.

Remember: all tools are to remain in this room.

A sensory kit is available at the front desk if a fidget is needed for use while working with your class.

LIGHTING

SUNGLASSES

I CAN WEAR SUNGLASSES TO BLOCK OUT SOME OF THE LIGHT.

A LIGHT COVER IS USED IN THE CALMING SPACE TO BLOCK OUT SOME OF THE LIGHT.

AUDITORY SUPPORTS

NOISE-CANCELING HEAD-PHONES

I CAN WEAR NOISE-CANCELING HEADPHONES TO BLOCK NOISE.

WHITE NOISE MACHINE

  • I can use the white noise machine to block out background noise.
  • Turn volume knob.
  • Select desired sound by pressing buttons.

INTEROCEPTIVE SUPPORTS

EMOTIONS CARDS AND MIRROR
I can use the emotions cards and mirror to recognize how I am feeling.

I can use a visual timer to self regulate.

-Choose amount of time for activity.
-Watch the red disappear as time passes.

HOBERMAN SPHERE

I CAN BREATHE USING THE SPHERE BY EXPANDING THE SPHERE AS I INHALE AND COMPRESSING THE SPHERE AS I EXHALE.

TACTILE SUPPORTS

I CAN ROLL THE SENSORY BALL ON MY HAND OR LEG.

I CAN TWIST AND SQUEEZE THE TANGLE.

I CAN DRAPE THE WEIGHTED LAP BLANKET ACROSS MY LEGS OR SHOULDERS.

STRESS BALL

I CAN SQUEEZE THE STRESS BALL TO RELIEVE ANXIETY.
