WHERE/HOW IS MINING USED IN MINNESOTA

  • In arrow head of Minnesota along lake superior
  • Clay is used in making bricks porcelain tiles and medicines
  • Silica Sand is used in making glass
  • Granite and limestone are used in building and houses

LAWS AND REGULATIONS

  • Clean Air Act - sets air quality standards- mining can only pollute the air so much
  • Toxic Substance Act - requires regulation of chemicals that present risk to health or environment-miners cant dump harmful chemicals in the envirnment

IMPACTS ON ENVIRONMENT

  • Acid mine drainage dumps into lakes and rivers raising water pH killing and hurting fish

CHANGE DUE TO MINING

  • They have to deforest over large pit mines
  • Underground mines can cause sink holes

RECENT NEWS

  • PolyMet Mine
  • Their are people that want to keep it closed and people that want to keep it open
  • PolyMet needs more than 20 permits to reopen
  • Has not opened yet
