Session 2: Being and Making Disciples: What, Exactly, We Are Trying to Do To People

Published on Jan 23, 2016

Ironically, the nature of discipleship is sometimes misunderstood. This misunderstanding comes primarily due to the overemphasis or under-emphasis of biblical teachings, and not usually the complete ignorance of them.

In this session, we learn what Christian discipleship is, how the Bible describes each aspect of it, and common mistakes in disciplemaking that lead to problems in life and stunted spiritual growth.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BEING AND
MAKING DISCIPLES
What, Exactly, We Are Trying to Do To People

It Is Vital To Have a Biblical Understanding of Discipleship Since We are Called to "Be" Then "Make" Disciples

Like a Maze,
Discipleship Sometimes Confuses People

The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained "will be like their teacher" (Luke 6:40)

Defining Discipleship

Photo by @boetter

Discipleship is the lifelong process of becoming Christlike, initiated by belief in Christ, then evidenced by spiritual flourishing that results in the transformation of the whole person, involving progressively knowing Christ, loving Christ, living for Christ, and loving others like Christ.

The Goal of Discipleship is a Changed Life

Meta = Change (Trans)

Morph = Form

When they heard this, they came under deep conviction and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what must we do?” Acts 2:37
