THE VIRGINIA COMPANY

  • Was a joint-stock company which is an organization that raised money by selling shares of a company
  • They were granted a charter by King James to settle in Virginia
  • Gave away land to attract new settlers
  • A colonist who bought land had a head right
  • Head right-the right to a certain amount of land
  • This process helped the colony's population grow

JOHN SMITH

  • Fought with captains on ships when sailing
  • Was not originally trusted by the settlers
  • Made peace with Powhatan the native tribe in Virginia
  • Helped Jamestown when they were struggling
  • "If you don't work, you don't eat!"John Smith said when the settlers were dying of starvation
  • Helped start Jamestown

Wealthy Plantation Owners

Tobacco was grown on plantation near rivers.

INDENTURED SERVANTS

  • Would work for seven to five years
  • During this time they were similar to slaves
  • Worked for the sponsors who paid for their voyage

POCAHONTAS

FACTS ABOUT POCAHONTAS

  • Made peace between her tribe and the colonists
  • Was also known as Matoaka, which means "The Playful One"
  • Her English name was Rebecca
  • Married John Rolfe
  • Had a child named Thomas

JOHN ROLFE

Lived From 1585 to 1622

FACTS ABOUT JOHN ROLFE

  • He found tobacco, the colony's most valuable crop
  • Helped unite the colony and the Native Americans by marring Pocahontas
  • Was killed in an attack by Native Americans

THE HOUSE OF BURGESSES

  • First met in Jamestown in 1619
  • The Virginia General Assembly was made of Governor’s council and The House of Burgesses.
  • The house of burgesses was elected by only white men who owned land could vote.

Bacon’s Rebellion

NATHANIEL BACON

  • The colonist wanted Governor Berkeley to send a group of of citizen soldiers also known as militia to attack Native Americans
  • Governor Berkeley wanted keep their relationship with Natives because they traded fur with them
  • Nathaniel Bacon led attacks against the Natives without Berkeley’s consent
  • Led a group of his followers into Jamestown to go against Berkeley

  • Berkeley left the colony but came back and arrested some of Bacon’s supporters

THE FIRST COLONY

Jamestown was the first settlement out of the thirteen colonies and it was located in Virginia.

THE WARM CLIMATE MADE IT POSSIBLE TO GROW CROPS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND WAS IDEALLY SUITED FOR PLANTATIONSI

Settlers did not come to Virginia seeking religious freedom, instead they were searching for gold.
