EVOLUTION

They scientific theory that population of organisms change over time. Their DNA changes.

POPULATION

A group of organisms of the same species that live in the same geographic at the same time.

TRAITS

A distinguishing quality or characteristic that can be passed from one generation to the next.

ADAPTATION

A trait that helps the organism survive in its environment.

SPECIES

A specific group of organisms that can produce fertile offsprings (offspring that can have babies)

MUTATION

Mutation
A change in an organism’s DNA. This can sometimes change their traits, and every so often give them an adaptation helpful to survive.

EXTINCTION

A species dies off

SELECTIVE BREEDING

Humans breed for desired traits

NATURAL SELECTION

When organisms with the best traits will survive, have more offspring, and pass their DNA to the next generation

GENETIC VARIATION

slight difference of genes in a species of traits. Same animal but look different or are different in some way.

OVERPRODUCTION

Living things reproduce more offspring than will survive.

CLADOGRAM

a tool used to show evolutionary relationships between organisms

VESTIGIAL STRUCTURES

A vestigial structure is an organ that was once used. Over time it was no longer needed, but continued to remain in the body. These structures were once used by an ancestor and were passed on through genes. Example: a human appendix

HOMOZYGOUS STRUCTURES

Similar structures that have different functions in different organisms

EMBRYOLOGY

Embryology
A piece of evidence for evolution; scientists have found that the embryos from different organisms resemble one another.

KEY TO NATURAL SELECTION

The most fit organism survives & reproduces.
