  • Virtue of hope

  • 2 years old
  • Autonomy is independence
  • Critical children do this to explore their limits
  • Parents need patience to let the child do this until they succeed
  • Teach the child when to ask for help

Initiative vs. Guilt

  • Between 3 - 5 years
  • Children learn how to explore interpersonal skills
  • Learn how to lead
  • Kids ask a lot more questions
  • Sense of purpose

Industry vs. Inferiority

  • Between ages 6 - 12
  • Try to win approval from others
  • Develop sense of pride in their accomplishments
  • If they are given negative feedback they may not reach their full potential

Identity vs. Role Confusion

  • Ages 12 - 18
  • Transition from childhood to adulthood
  • Want to feel like they belong in society
  • Body image plays a role
  • Form identity through exploration

Intimacy vs. Isolation

  • Ages 18 - 40
  • Explore relationships for long term commitments
  • Avoiding this stage can lead to loneliness or isolation

Generativity vs. Stagnation

  • Ages 40 - retirement age
  • Settle down in relationship
  • Become a bigger part of the picture
  • Develop a sense of care for others

Integrity vs. Despair

  • 65 or older
  • Contemplate back on lives
  • Ask yourself if you have lived your life to the fullest without regrets
  • If not then you feel depressed
