THE MODEL

THREE KEY QUESTIONS
Context background to the model

QUESTION #1

WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY?

AN EXAMPLE

Personal examples, not happiness, but what lights your file

REFLECT

  • Make a list of things that bring you joy, things you keep coming back to, things you can't put down.
  • What are some examples where you have been satisfied but not happy or happy but not satisfied? How do these compare to moments you have felt joyful?

QUESTION #2

ARE YOU GOOD AT IT?

Turn to a board of directors

Example, of the things that bring you joy, are you good at them. Something you really loved but aren't good at and realizing. Turn to other people to help realize your strengths. Joy is personal. Instead of being mentored by one person, you should have a "board of directors" that are good at different things that help you understand your strengths.

“I feel like this assignment has allowed me to understand myself on a much deeper level. I feel empowered and inspired by the words from others. Much of the time I feel like my insecurities prevent me from being my best self, I feel doubt in my decisions no matter how many times I hear the words “You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it”. The responses from my family and friends have shown me that I have so much to offer the world and that I should live as fully as possible and share as much of myself as possible with others."

“The most challenging thing for me ... was to ask others what my strengths were. I felt very vulnerable asking those questions, particularly since all the people that I asked...were individuals that are very meaningful in my life. It is possibly a cultural thing, since in England we are taught that it is impolite to talk about our strengths and qualities in contrast to taking a more modest and understated role. “

"I feel that not only has this assignment aided in my understanding of my qualities, but also I have been able to understand a good deal more about my weaknesses. This is primarily through observing my reactions to what people said in the responses and reflecting on myself as a whole.”

REFLECT

  • From the strengths assignment, how did your writers describe the things that make you unique? Your strengths?
  • How do your strengths relate to those things that bring you joy? Which of the things you initially listed also allow for your strengths to be featured?

QUESTION #3

DOES THE WORLD NEED YOU TO DO IT?

"[The] more radical the person is, the more fully he or she enters into reality so that, knowing it better, he or she can transform it. The individual is not afraid to confront, to listen, to see the world unveiled. This person is not afraid to meet the people or to enter into a dialogue with them. This person does not consider himself or herself the proprietor of history's or of all people, or the liberator of the oppressed; but he or she does commit himself or herself, within history, to fight at their side."

Mitigate redundancies

Answering questions in order. Does the world actually need the thing that brings you joy and that you are good at. Another personal example.

REFLECT

  • What are some societal wrongs you can identify you'd like to work to change?
  • Where do you see the passion above intersecting with your joys & strengths?
  • How have you seen your gifts, talents, and strengths already affecting your community?

This isn't the perfect theory, some people say that there isn't one purpose and you're setting up yourself for failure by looking for the one perfect job. Continuously evaluate whether you fit the job and it fits you.
It is a privilege of thinking about vocation, not everyone can afford to be passionate about it.
