Northern Bay College

Northern Bay Story...

Were 9 individual schools all very close together and brought under the NBC banner. Explain why...

We're now 5 campuses with over 2100 students and 280 staff.

4 x p-8 campuses and 1 x 9-12

GOING 1:1 going byo

It's an adventure

EARLY DAYS

The whole reason that BYOD began was to increase equity and access to students.

There was no consistency amongst device integration / allocation for many schools and BYO solves this.

BYO is also a great way to streamline technology use to ensure learning opportunities are being supported by the technology, and not have the technology impact learning in a negative way.

1:1 programs need to be purposeful and relevant in the context of how we teach and how students learn.

OVERKILL

1:1? TO MUCH OF A GOOD THING IS NOT ALWAYS GOOD...

“Bring your own device/technology (BYOD / BYOT) is an educational development and a supplementary school technology resourcing model,
where the home and the school collaborate in arranging for students’ 24/7/365 use of their own digital technology/ies to be extended in to the classroom, and in so doing to assist their teaching and learning and the organisation of their schooling and, where relevant, the complementary education outside the classroom.”

Lee & Levins 2012.

Lee and Levin, the countries foremost BYO experts. Based in NSW and co-authored the first Australian based publication on BYO in Australian schools.

IMPLEMENTATION

STARTING LINE

HAVE A VISION GOING Forward, AND PLAN FOR IT
...And in saying this it's not about 1:1, it's about using technology effectively.

The integration of 1:1 makes up half of the work in effectively embedding the technology for purposeful, student centered use.

DOCUMENTATION

POLICIES, AUA'S, WEBSITE INFO, CORRESPONDANCE
A very large part of a 1:1 program relies heavily on the policies you have in place to support that program.

AUA - acceptable usage agreements
BYOD - which we are in the process of rewriting.
PROCEDURES - as to what staff do when kids misbehave on devices that are there own...

There are also other factors as to how these are created and who has input.

Also need to look at what current behaviour/engagement policies are in place and how these can merge and marry the development of these documents.

For example we have integrated in to our AUA's for example our College CORE Values and the work we have done around SWPB.
