Find Soohorang

the Olympic mascot is missing...

Soohorang is a Siberian tiger and a symbol of protection in the Korean culture. Soohorang is the protector of athletes and all people associated with the Olympic games. Siberian tigers are endangered with only 450 of these tigers in Asia. We are now at 449 because...Someone took Soohorang overnight!!!!!
He is nowhere to be found, and we need your help! Your job is to find your team, problem solve, use transdisciplinary skills, attitudes, the Learner Profile as well as your enviornment in order to be the first group to find the "real" Soohorang.

steps to finding soohorang

  • Look on the back of your "Y" chart for the highlighted country.
  • Find others who have the same country highlighted on their paper. This is your team.
  • Find your Breakout Box!
  • Start your journey to finding Soohorang!
  • The first team to solve the problems will find the "real" Soohorang!

Alpine schoolvideo

  • We will watch a video all the way through once...it moves quickly and covers a lot in about 4 minutes.
  • We will use the Y-chart to categorize our observations into one of the following: PYP, STEM, or PYP/STEM blended.
  • Then we will share with our table groups and create a group chart on the 12x12 sticky pages.
  • Lastly, we will share out our findings and/or post our observations and take a gallery walk as time allows.

IB plus Stem

  • IB focuses on knowledge
  • STEM focuses on integration of subject areas and creating ways to synthesize knowledge across subject areas.
  • With ultimate goal being to create new understandings about our world.

IB plus Stem

  • IB focuses on key concepts.
  • STEM focuses on problem solving using "Engineering Design Process"
  • Key concepts used within problem solving situations provide students with guiding questions to drive the problem-solving process.

IB Plus STem

  • IB focuses on ATLs or transdisciplinary skills.
  • STEM focuses on personalized learning, having a say in what and how we learn.
  • Students use the ATLs to personalize their own learning and make it more authenic, relevant, and meaningful in their world.

ib plus stem

  • In IB, we focus on attitudes (what we want students to feel, value and demonstrate).
  • In STEM we focus on 21st century skills including collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity.
  • Students use their attitudes to enhance their learning by connecting with others in their world.

ib plus stem

  • In IB, we focus on taking action on things that are important to students.
  • In STEM, we build relationships with people, places, and professions.
  • When students make these connections, they are able to take action and have an impact on their world in a more meaningful way.

Our focus is, and continues to be, on the IB PYP foundation that we have developed over the last five years.

With solid implementation of STEM philosophies and practices, we will become much stronger, cohesive IB PYP World Schools.

your team task-Grade levels

  • Take the PLTW Quick Reference Guide and the IB Programme of Inquiry Brainstorming Sheet
  • Read through the modules to see where these modules may "fit" within the POI
  • Think conceptually...BIG IDEAS or we will have modules taught alongside rather than as an integral part of the Units of Inquiry.
  • THIS IS NOT EASY!! This is initial planning and thinking.
  • We are SO MUCH SMARTER than when we did this the first time and put Animals under Who We Are...we have grown so much!

team task-specialists/RR

  • Look at the PLTW Launch Quick Reference guide which details the topics and big ideas in each module at each grade level.
  • See how you can connect to any of these areas. (Specialists)
  • See the areas that you may be asked to support students in the future (RR)
