BATTLE OF SOMME

  • Also know as Somme offensive.
  • Was one of the largest battles of the First World War.
  • Fought between July 1 and November 1,1916 near the Somme river in France.

CAUALTIES

  • July 1, 1916 resulted in 57,470 British casualties.
  • And France suffered only around 2,000.
  • By the end of the battle, in November 1916, the British had lost 420,000, the French lost 200,000 men and the Germans 500,000.

WHY WAS THE BATTLE OF SOMMME SO IMPORTANT?

  • It was also important to France because the French were able to regain a decent amount of land from the Germans.
  • And it weakened the German army.

DISADVANTAGES

  • British soldiers were not trained nor prepared for life on the battle field.
  • Weather and storms was a huge disadvantage to both the Germans and Allied forces.

Advantages

  • The British/French had the advantage of tanks,while the Germans had trench warfare,enabling them to hide from bombardment.
