DESCRIPTION

  • It is black with yellow spots or stripes. Some can be nearly completely black while others the yellow is dominant. Shades of red and orange may sometimes appear,either replacing or mixing with the yellow. Fire salamanders have a very long life span. They have lived for more than 50 years.

The fire salamander lives in Central European forests and are more common in hilly areas.

Fire salamanders are possibly the easiest of all salamanders to breed in captivity. Unlike many of the lunged salamanders, Salamandra species mate on land. It take two months for the eggs to hatch.

Their skin has poison which they use when attacked by predators. This poison is very powerful and dangerous to people.
Despite their bright coloring, common fire salamanders are very difficult to find because they like to hide under stones, logs or other objects during the day. They are active at night-time and when it rains.They eat insects, spiders, slugs, newts and small frogs.
They live in forests throughout central Europe, especially in hilly areas.
