What is the Electoral College?

  • The Electoral College is made up of 530 special people who vote directly for our President.

History of Electoral College

  • The Electoral College dates back to 1787 during the time the constitution was being created. Citizens cannot vote directly because our founding fathers didn't think regular citizens were not informed enough to vote directly.
  • The Electoral College can be found in the constitution Article ll Section l Clause ll
  • The creators of the Electoral College are our founding fathers: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington.

  • The Presidential candidates must win the votes of the people in the Electoral College, to win the election one must have 270 Electoral votes.

  • The Electors give their votes to the candidate that appeals to them the most.

  • If both candidates do not receive enough votes the winner will be the candidate with more support during the election.

  • 538 is the number of how many people are in the Electoral College.
  • 270 is the number of Electoral votes that a candidate can receive to win the position as President.

How many Electors each state gets?

  • The way Electors are assigned to each state is with their senate and house of representatives.

Conclusion

  • The Electoral College was created so we could elect our President with the decision of special people. One candidate needs 270 to win the election. One candidate can win the popular vote but if they do not have enough electoral votes they will lose, if the other candidate has 270+ they will beat the popular candidate and win the election.
