STEPS

  • Getting our materials
  • Preparing everything (reading over what we have to do)
  • Duct taping the funnel to the large soda bottle
  • Filling the soda bottle with water using the pitcher being careful not to fill the funnel
  • Tip the bottle over and hope that it worked (this is where the rimmed plate came in, our hands weren't big enough to cover the funnel)
  • We failed... Many, many times...

The point of this project was to figure out why air formed at the end of the bottle. Unfortunately, for us, it didn't go as planned. We had filled the bottle up with water including the funnel, sadly, we lost all of the water in the funnel, but, the air ended up forming in it which caused the water to stay in the bottle.

BUT ALLISON, WHY DID THE WATER NOT PASS INTO THE FUNNEL?

Well, I'm glad you asked, the air particles that occupied the funnel caused the water to stay in the bottle.

HOW DOES OUR PROJECT CONNECT TO ENGINEERING?

Our experiment connects to engineering because we use technology to build our experiment. When we build the project we are engineering.

In conclusion, we've answered our driving question which is: Why won't the air allow water to pass through the funnel: and the answer that Allison and I found was that the air particles that occupied the funnel caused the water to stay in the bottle. We've also proved that matter is made up of particles too small to be seen by the human eye by telling you that even though we can't see them, we know that the air particles are taking up the space in the funnel.
