CHILDHOOD

  • Father: Abraham Mendelssohn
  • Abraham was a banker and is the son the German Jewish Philosopher Moses Mendelssohn
  • Had 3 siblings: Fanny, Rebecka, and Paul Mendelssohn

  • Born into a Jewish Family
  • Later got baptized as a reformed christian
  • He was recognized as a musical prodigy, but his parents were cautious and didn't seek to capitalize his talent
  • Moved to Berlin in 1811

  • When he was little, his parents enrolled him to study piano with Ludwig Berger
  • His parents wanted the best education possible
  • In his childhood he had conducted a total of five operas and 11 symphonies

FAMILY

  • He married CÉcile Charlotte Sophie Jeanrenaud (1817-1853)
  • Had five children; Paul, Marie, Lilli, Felix, and Karl Mendelssohn-Bartholdy

MUSIC

  • He wrote syphonies, concerti, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music
  • He was well received as a composer, conductor, and soloist in Britain
  • He was interested in music by Bach, another composer

  • He wrote a violin sonata, two piano sonatas, one short opera, a male quartet, a cantata, and multiple songs, all in 1820.
  • In 1830, he conducted "Reformed Symphony" and that followed with a three year trip to Europe.
