PRESENTATION OUTLINE

All students start with Level A

As stated in Lesson #2, all students start with Level A.
Students work through the levels at the speed of their learning, finding the problem where they are challenged and can probe deeper.

Working in Groups

within a class, grade-level and/or cross-grade level
Problem Solving can be celebrated through school-wide use. Students can work with other students in their class, grade level, and/or cross-grade level. Sometimes older students are paired with younger students to collaborate on the POMs.

Problem Solve in Large Groups and Spaces

Classes can meet to problem solve the POM at a central location.

Facilitating Problem Solving

Teachers are key
In all scenarios, teachers facilitate problem solving -- asking good questions, encouraging perseverance, and probing for understanding.

Group Collaboration

Students share their thinking.
Student share their thinking by working in pairs and groups, making presentations and engaging in gallery walks.

Status and Explanation Posters

When students become challenged, they should create Status Posters (on a level they are still exploring). When the students have completed a level, the should create an Explanation Poster.

Gallery Walk

to compare ideas
Next, students examine the posters to work through the problem where they are challenged and to compare ideas and strategies.
-Every child’s thinking is valued and all levels of the POM.
-Student gain self-confidence and learn that they are good problem solvers.
-Students from all grades can communicate about the common problems, approaches and possible solutions.
-The entire school does math together

Debrief and Write-Up
At the end of the problem-solving process, sometimes students are asked to produce write-ups about a selected level for individual accountability. Attached is a Guide for POM Write-Ups.
