The Participants

Middle School Technology Class
6 classes of Tech Ed students in urban middle school varying in size - 8-24 students.
Self selected by enrollment in course on first day.
Assumption that this represents entire student body.
No mention of the class composition.

Mixed Methods

Action Research
Action research by teachers for teachers. Combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

survey results

quantitative
Rating 1-10 on their understanding of the instructions.

Perception based on small sample size.

observation checklist

quantitative
Three areas of observation:
1. How many questions were asked?
2. How many non-three person groups were formed?
3. The # of student requests for different materials.
Are they relevant observations?
Consider all of the variables involved...

statistical analysis

lacking in evidence
Researches claim, "a significant difference between the two groups emerged" but there is no relevant statistical analysis to back up this claim
Problems - students perceived that they could follow the instructions = successfully completed the activity, students who missed instructions, groups were able to observe other groups, different classes used only one method of instruction so it is hard to compare.

Focus group

qualitative
Only 22 students in total.
One class from each instructional delivery method.
Motivation was pizza.
Feelings...perceptions...
overcoming barriers...

Discussion

Strengths

  • referred to other sources
  • task described in detail
  • recommendations for further study
  • results could inform practice
If the motivation was to get new tech for this school...findings could be used to support this.

limitations

  • lack of statistical analysis
  • lack of clear focus
  • generalizations
  • contradictions
"Technology in the classroom promotes engagement, more interest in subject matter and better understanding of complex subjects."
