CONFUCIANISM

• Founded by King Fu Tzu
• Began during Zhou dynasty

• More like an ethical code than religion
• Try to control social actions
• Main goals are order and happiness
• Achieve these by education and self-effort

DIFFUSION/SPREAD

• Spread by his followers after death of Confucius
• Spread to Korea and Japan
• Became foundation of Chinese education

TAOISM

ORIGIN AND FOUNDER

• Grew from ancient Chinese philosophies
• Reaction to spread of Confucianism and Buddhism
• Founder is Lao-Tse

PRINCIPLES

• Yin/Yang symbol reflects harmony and peace
• Emphasizes the Three Jewels
• Three Jewels are compassion, moderation, and humility.
• Tao(Dao) means "the way" or "the path"

PRINCIPLES

• Great emphasis on nature
• Tao Te Ching is the most significant text

DIFFUSION

• Spread to areas around China
• Incorporated into beliefs of some religions
