ARGON, STRONTIUM, AND NIOBIUM BY: NIKKI GLENN

ARGON

  • Name: Argon
  • Symbol: Ar
  • Argon is a gas at room temperature
  • Argon has no color

HISTORY OF ARGON

  • Discovered by Sir William Ramsay
  • Year: 1894
  • Location: London, England

Uses of Argon
Argon is often used in fluorescent tubes and low-energy lightbulbs. Also, argon is used to fill in the space between panes in double-glazed windows.
There are no biological roles of argon.

Strontium
Name: strontium
Symbol: Sr
Strontium is a solid at room temperature.
Where freshly cut strontium is a silvery color, it quickly turns yellowish with the formation of the oxide.

HISTORY OF STRONTIUM

  • Discovered by Adair Crawford
  • Year: 1790
  • Location: Scotland

Uses of Strontium
Strontium salts are used to give the red color to fireworks and flares. Strontium is also used in the creation of glow-in-the-dark paints and plastics. Strontium chloride hexahydrate is used in toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

NIOBIUM

  • Name: niobium
  • Symbol: Nb
  • Niobium is a solid at room temperature
  • Niobium is a grey metallic color

HISTORY OF NIOBIUM

  • Discovered by Charles Hatchett
  • Year 1801
  • Location: England

Uses of Niobium
Niobium is used in alloys such as stainless steel. It is also used in superconducting magnets for particle accelerators, MRI scanners, and NMR equipment.
