BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK

• Badlands National park is located in southwestern South Dakota.
• It covers around 243 thousand acres .
• It was established as a national monument first in 1939
• It was later established as as a national park in 1978

BADLANDS'S FORMATION

• Formed from millions of years deposition & erosion 
• Like the Grand Canyon, was eroded from rivers & streams 
• Will erode away completely in 500 thousand years

BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK

• The US claimed it was a useless, uninhabitable land
• However, they later found it was rich in Uranium
• In the early 40's, it was used as a bombing range
• Certain parts are not accessible

NATIVE AMERICAN INFLUENCE

• Is considered sacred land by the Great Sioux Nation
• Many Native American sacred ceremonies performed here
• Called the Stronghold to the Sioux
