Some of the ideas talked about in how to read literature like a professor are used In the sword in the stone

EVERY TRIP IS A QUEST!

  • In the beginning of The Sword in the Stone the wart gets lost in the forest
  • After this happens he finds the wizard, Merlin who says he will be his mentor
  • After this the wart realizes that this trip is a quest even though he originally didn't mean to get lost

NOW WHERE HAVE I SEEN HER BEFORE?

  • Works of literature often base characters off of characters in other works of literature
  • The biggest relation we saw was Merlin to Dumbledore from the harry potter series
  • They are both philosophical and are mentors to young heroes.

THE BIBLE

  • The stories and message of the bible are often shown in literature
  • The wart is lost in the woods
  • This symbolizes him being lost from god

FOLK TALES

  • Robin Wood is a reference to a commonly known folktale
  • The adventure that the Wart and Kay go on involves fairys and a griffin which are also references to folk tales

ITS MORE THAN JUST RAN AND SNOW

  • The weather has a strong effect on the atmosphere of the book and can foreshadow what is going to happen
  • When master Twyti arrives at the castle to go boar hunting it is snowing
  • The weather in this chapter builds suspense and makes the hunting trip more difficult due to reduced vision

IS THAT A SYMBOL

  • Some things in the sword in the stone symbolize the absurdity of knighthood
  • The questing beast is sought out by king pellinore only to be let go and chased after agian
  • Due to the lack mobility with there armor, as shown by King Pellinore and Sir Grummore's joust, jousting is a shown as a pointless and difficult activity

FLIGHTS OF FANCY

  • Flight symbolizes freedom
  • The Wart experiences this freedom when he is turned into a goose
  • The geese society are not bound by laws is still peaceful and not chaotic

BAPTISM

  • The Wart is symbolically baptized when he is turned into a fish
  • The Wart is taught some lessons and comes out a new person

MARKED FOR GREATNESS

  • The Wart is destined to be great from the begining of the book
  • Him getting lost and finding Merlin was all supposed to happen
  • This led to him eventually pulling th sword out of the stone

IRONIES

  • A good example of an irony os when The Wart, Archimedes, and Merlin are discussing birds and Kay comes in sauing he had killed a thrush
  • Another example of an irony is how the inn is leocked up so Wart cant get in to get Kay's sword so The Wart has to pull the sword out of the stone

DONT READ WITH YOUR EYES

  • The Wart pulling the sword out of the stone and becoming King Arthur has a deeper significance than an ending to the story
  • The former king of England was not always fair and The Wart becoming king changes the entire course of the country

ITS RARELY JUST ILLINESS

  • The illness of the fish that Merlin cures symbolizes how helpless that species of fish are and how they are helpless in fish society
