Parliament makes laws, debates issues of the day, represents the views of people across the UK, and checks and challenges the work of the government.
It does NOT sit on Sundays
Is Parliament the same as the government?
The government takes a leading role in the running of the country. But parliament is bigger than that.
How many houses of Parliament are there?
There are two
- The House of Commons
- The House of Lords
The government and the opposition sit in the House of Commons. This is the elected chamber of MPS.
How many constituencies are there in the UK?
(a) 560
(b) 650
(c) 740
B There are 650 constituencies
The House of Lords is made up mostly of life peers, who are appointed for their knowledge and experience.
Many of its members, the crossbenchers and the bishops, are NON-POLITICAL
Besides the two houses there is one more important person. Who is it?
The queen's role nowadays is largely ceremonial, but she does still do what?

At the moment, they are NOT negotiating Brexit. Only the government is doing that. This is very controversial!
