PLOT OF GATSBY

- "The Great Gatsby" is a tragic love story in a man's attempt to get his one and only love back
- takes place in the early 1920's during the "Roaring 20's"
- back and forth love triangle/ Gatsby loses her
- themes: betrayal, power, greed, and American Dream

THEME OF BETRAYAL

- betrayal as far as infidelity
- Jay and Daisy: promised to be together after the war/ Daisy then married Tom Buchanan/ Jay and Daisy have an affair behind Tom's back
- Tom and mistress: Tom is married to Daisy, but consistently has affair with his mistress behind Daisy's back.

Friendship Betrayal: Nick Carraway is supposedly friends with Tom but supports Jay and Daisy's affair

THEME OF POWER

- Tom and Jay repeatedly fight over Daisy, building up their egos and self power
- both are very wealthy, leads to butting-heads
- Jay shows power by throwing magnificent parties without anyone knowing who he really is/ shows his power over people who haven't even scene his face

THEME OF GREED

- Jay wants to take Daisy back for himself, even though he knows she belongs to someone else
- greed for money, power over Daisy, etc.
- Daisy loves men who have money: Tom/ Jay, for her own personal gain

THEME OF AMERICAN DREAM

- Novel resembles how people acted back then
- confident, always partying, jazz music, prohibition, etc.
- takes place when most people strived during this time
- American Dream is to ultimately become successful/ almost everyone was successful
- Jay was surrounded by luxury
- took money for granted
