Why/What was the conflict?

  • Argentina and Britain was fighting over the Falklands.
  • Britain wanted to remain British in the Falklands, not Argentine
  • Argentina believed the Falklands was theirs.

When/where?

  • April 2, 1982 -- Argentina invades island
  • April 25, British recaptured South Georgia
  • June 1, 5000 British troops attacked Port Stanley
  • June 11, British victory at Mount Tumbledown
  • June 14 & 20, General Menendez surrendered- end of hostilities

CASUALTIES

Gulf war--who?

  • Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Israel
  • UN coalition involving United States
  • US president George Bush
  • Iraq president Saddam Hussein

Why/what?

  • UN launched coalition against Iraq
  • Iraq invaded Kuwait
  • Requests for cancellation of wartime loans and additional funds were refused
  • Saddam Hussein also wanted control of oil reserves in Kuwait & Saudi Arabia

  • August 2, 1990
  • Iraq tanks swept in Kuwait
  • February 1991, war ended
  • Mainly took place in Kuwait and Iraq
