THE AMERICAN DREAM

The freedoms to do as you please as long as it is legal.
New finical opportunities unlike anywhere else.
The ability to be poor and become incredibly wealthy.

FITZGERALD EARLY LIFE

Born on the 24th of September 1896 in Saint Paul Minnesota.
Was the only son in his family.
He had a romantic view on life.
He always strived to be the best.
Attend Princeton University but flunked out not to long after.

FITZGERALD ADULT YEARS

After flunking out of Princeton he joined the army in 1917.
In 1918 he was stationed in Alabama where he met his future wife Zelda Sayre (the daughter of a Supreme Court judge).
Fitzgerald then moved to New York to write a novel and marry Zelda.
After only landing a $90 a month job Zelda broke the engagement.
In 1920 Fitzgerald published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, and married Zelda.
In 1921 he had his daughter Frances.
Fitzgerald then wrote his second novel in 1922 called “The Beautiful and the Damned”.
In 1925 Fitzgerald wrote his most popular novel “The Great Gatsby”
As Fitzgerald life progress he became depressed and an alcoholic.
He died of a heart attack at 44 in Hollywood

JAZZ AGE

The time from post World War 1 to the start of the Great Depression in 1929.
A time of the prohibition and speakeasies.
Jazz was the new and most popular form of music.

PROHIBITION

The 18th amendment of The United States Constitution banning the consumption, sale, and production of alcohol which was inacted in 1920 and repealed by the 21st amendment in 1933.

EFFECTS OF THE PROHIBITION

The rise of organized crime due to the financial opportunity of illegally selling and producing alcohol.
The creation of violent gang crimes to seize the new opportunity to for an extreme amount of profit.
The creation of speakeasies, where communities of people would come together to drink. And where a majority of the 1920’s life was occurring.
Bootlegging- the action of illegally smuggling alcohol
