Introduction to Comparing Numbers

By: Emily Morris

1.NBT.3

I can determine when a two digit number is greater than, less than, or equal to another two digit number.

Untitled Slide

  • If a number is greater than the next number you will use this symbol >.
  • If a number is less than the next number you use this symbol
  • If a number is the same as the next number you use the equal sign.

Is 84 greater than, less than, or = to 92?

  • Is 84 greater than less than or = to 92?
  • First you want to look at the tens place in both, two-digit numbers.
  • 8 is in the tens place in 84.
  • 9 is in the tens place in 92.
  • 8 is less than 9 so 84 is
  • As you notice the symbol looks like a mouth. The mouth always eats the greater number, so it is eating 92.

Is 72 greater than,less than, or = to 71?

  • As we learned before you want to look at the tens place first to see if 72 is >,
  • 7 is in the tens place in 72.
  • 7 is also in the tens place in 71.
  • Since the tens digit is the same, now you want to look in the ones place.

Is 72 greater than,less than, or = to 71?

  • There is a 2 in the ones place in 72.
  • There is a 1 in the ones place in 71.
  • Since 2 is greater than 1, that means that 72 > 71.
  • As you notice the symbol looks like a mouth. The mouth always eats the greater number, so it is eating 72.

Is 64 greater than, less than or equal to 64.

  • When you look at the two numbers, you notice that the tens digit and the ones digit is the same in 64.
  • When both numbers are the same, that means the two numbers are equal.
  • So 64 = 64.

Comparing Numbers

  • Now that you have seen me explain how to compare two numbers, what symbol do you think would go in the blanks in the following equations.
  • 29___ 32
  • 67___ 54
  • 15___ 15
