PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Have you ever...
- Felt frustrated by the barriers in our current school system?
- Wanted to do more to help our minority students?
- Enjoyed collaborating with passionate people?
- NOW IS YOUR CHANCE.
To strategically target underrepresented students and empower them to access college and other post secondary options by capitalizing on teacher/counselor/student relationships.
How will we do this?
- remove barriers blocking students from post-secondary options
- capitalize on relationships with adults to empower these underrepresented students

"Another example of the importance of teacher-student relationships in high school students stems from intervention studies aimed at improving academic outcomes for low-income students...
...students who participated in the intervention [of positive relationships between students/teachers] SIGNIFICANTLY improved their GPA"
(Murray & Malmgren, 2005)
"teacher-student relationships have an impact on the academic self-esteem of students" (Ryan et al., 1994)
"Self-confidence and future aspirations have a significant impact on students’ interest in school, their academic self-efficacy and in turn, their academic achievement" (Wentzel, 2003)
"In addition to academic achievement, positive teacher-student relationships provide important social outcomes for students"
After School Sessions

INTENTIONALITY:

WE RECOGNIZE...
- most organizations don't effectively partner with those who know the kids best (staff and families)
- We WILL: our unique approach is to RELY on those partnerships (families, school, NPOs)
INTENTIONAL RECRUITMENT:
target marginalized students (i.e. race, language, disability, income, etc.)
ADDRESS BARRIERS: passing all classes, college apps/tours, SAT/ACT, researching college supports on campus
