...book clubs are not merely about books and discussion protocols.

They are about the humans that come to them, the people that we become when we are in them, and the powerful people that endure--long after we put the texts down--because we have read together. Cornelius Minor, p. viiii.

"As we imagine book clubs in our classrooms, we envision our students doing the work we've been teaching." (p. 2) . What does this look like?

Are youth reading?

  • 33% of 13 year olds read daily and 19% of 17 year olds hardly read at all. (2007)
  • 65% of 17 year olds read about 15 pages a day. (concurrent research over time)
  • Eighth grade reading scores went done.
  • p. 4

They spend more time with the screen than reading.
