What is gold?
Gold is a chemical element. It’s symbol is Au.Pure gold is soft and usually alloyed with other metals such as platinum ect.

Gold is formed when massive stars explode into a supernova. After the gold is formed it has to travel to earth.

How is gold collected?
Gold can be collected by diggers and big digging Machinery. It can also be panned.

Gold can be mined underground and above!

Panning is a method of gold searching. It is used as a less expensive way of finding gold if a big machine is out of budget.

What impact does gold mining have on the environment ?
Gold mining clears out lots of land and trees leaving lots of animals homeless.

Mining on the land can include the loss of biodiversity and soil erosion, it can also form sinkholes.

It is unlikely for a former mining site to ever have the same amount of greenery and nature grow back ever again.

Why gold such a valuable resource?
Gold has the highest resistance of all the metals and it is a noble metal because does not oxidize.

What are the properties of gold?
Gold is a soft yellow metal. Like other metals, gold is also highly malleable

Gold is very dense. It’s melting point is 1065 Celsius.

How much do gold licenses cost?
Right now, a gold license costs around $2.60 per hectare. You have to have a miners right to prospect in Victoria. You have to be 18 or over to own one of these. It is $24.20.
