  • Mother Emilia, Father Karol, and Brother Edmund
  • Born in the town of Wodowice, Poland.
  • Raised in a town of 10,000 residents.

FAMILY LIFE

  • Born into loving family
  • Credits his father for teaching him prayer
  • Father taught him to altar serve.
  • He would pray in a cross position for more guidance .

DEATH

  • Karol's immediate family was dead by age 21
  • Sister Olga died before he was born.
  • Mother died at age 9
  • Father died at age 18
  • Brother died at age 21

  • Karol grew up as a Catholic.
  • He was baptized at 1 month old.
  • He received First Communion at age 9.
  • He was confirmed into the Church at age 18.

EDUCATION

  • Basic education from elementary school-high school.
  • Attended Jagiellonian University to become an actor
  • Later ended up joining a seminary to become a priest in 1944.

WORLD WAR II

  • The Nazis invaded Poland in 1939
  • Karol took a job as a mine worker to avoid arrest
  • The Nazis were protestant and arrested Catholics.
  • Karol helped Jews escape to safety to avoid certain death.

ROAD TO PAPACY

  • Promoted to the Bishop of Krakow on September 28, 1958
  • Promoted to Archbishop of Krakow on December 30, 1964.
  • 12 years later he was promoted to Cardinal
  • After one year of being a cardinal, Karol was chosen as pope.

  • Helped end communism in Poland
  • Made 104 international trips
