PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Allium acuminatum, commonly known as the Hookers onion is a kind of wild flower that thrives in Garry oak meadows. But since the introduction of scotch broom, it hasn’t been doing so well.
Scotch broom has taken over many ecosystems such as the Garry oak ecosystem. With its quick germination of seeds and mass seed production, one adult plant can turn into many thousands of plants in a matter of years, giving the hooker’s onion no place to grow.
land development kills lots of wildlife such as many trees, animals, insects and many wild flowers like the hooker's onion. With the development of land the hooker's onion has no place to grow, and the once field of wild flowers is now a busy run way with rows of houses on either side.
The introduction of people into the Garry oak ecosystem is more harmful then beneficial. As people walk through the meadow, they trample many different kinds of wild flowers such as the hooker's onion lowering its chance of survival and reproduction.
We can help restore Hooker's onion by removing scotch broom. When we remove Scotch broom we are making more room for hooker's onion and other wild flowers to grow. by doing something as simple as that, were helping to restore an ecosystem. but by doing so we have trampled many wild flowers trying to help so its kind of a win lose situation.
By certain organizations claiming Garry oak meadows and using the land as a wild life conservancy, we are helping to save the ecosystem form turning into developed land, saving the hooker's onion.
