  • The Silk Road not only circulategoods, but also exchanged splendid cultures
  • People traveling on the Silk Road were not aware that they were carrying rats. Those rats had fleas, and they were what helped spread the black death from person to person.

marco polo and the silk road

  • Marco Polo traveled on the Silk Road for trade and good fortune
  • Marco Polo inspired people to travel along the Silk Road, and that leaded to the spread Black Death

the siege of caffa

  • As the Tartars started to become sick from the serious disease, a large amount of people started to die in a short amount of time. Soon they started catapulting the dead bodies over the walls, into the city. The Genoans who escaped from Caffa soon found they were also suffering from the disease.

  • the Silk Road route is over 6,500 km long and got its name because the early Chinese traded silk along it. Silk was the main thing they traded but it was also used for medicine, perfumes, spices and livestock.

causes and SYMPTOMS of the black death

  • Fever
  • Weakness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Chills and shock
  • Tissue bleading and death may cause the dying tissures to appear black

common treatments

  • Cooked onions
  • Ten-year-old treacle
  • Arsenic
  • Crushed emeralds
  • Sitting in the sewers
  • Sitting in a room between two enormous fires
  • Fumigating your house with herbs

Effects Of The Black Death:
as you can imagine the Black Death had a big effect on Asia, Europe and Africa. Here are some of many things that affected all 3 continents

labour SHORTAGES

  • Because so many people died from the Black Death, it caused a labour shortage so not much work could get done, because so many of the past workers died due to the desiese

peasant uprisings

  • The peasant revolt was a very big peasant uprising, here is part of what they were fighting for:
  • Many peasants had to work for free on church land, sometimes up to two days in the week. This meant that they could not work on their own land which made it difficult to grow enough food for their families.

the weakening of feudal structures

  • After the plague hit, there was a great deal of land available because of the amount of deaths. The average person was able to jump in and take this land, and was no longer bound to obey others.
