Teenagers For my media product I have decided to use a teenager as my main protagonist. This is to portray the coming of age genre. In this opening, I have represented the teenager as being curious and anxious. This slightly represents the teenagers of the modern day and how they are shown in the media. Also, to touch on the subject of mental health, more and more every day we hear that mental health in teenagers is becoming a huge issue. My protagonist in this is shown to be paranoid and going slightly insane when in the virtual world however being fine and relaxed when taking off the virtual reality headset. This could possibly link to the idea that social media and too much time online can make you feel paranoid and anxious.
Costume The costume I have used on my protagonist in my media project is supposed to portray the typical clothes which modern teenagers wear. This is because they will look at the clothes and relate to it . He is wearing a Jack wills T-shirt and wearing Nike shoes. These brands are very popular and iconic with teenagers. I felt like the costume had a big impact on the way that the characters are portrayed in the project so I tried to make him seem like the typical teen.
Mise-en-scene The mise-en-scene in a lot of the footage directly portray the social group which I am trying to represent. For example, when the character is sat in his room, he is surrounded by posters of skateboarding as well as art work and collectable signs. The use of including this in the background is used to link the character with the trends of the modern day in teenagers. This is representing this character as child out and down to earth. The skating could link into another reason as to a further narrative element in the film as there could be lots of scenes featuring this.
Location The location used for when the character steps into the 'real world' is a bedroom. In the bedroom, there is lots of posters of skateboarding and artwork (as previously talked about in mis-en-scene). Location wise, I thought this was the perfect location for a teenager to be placed in. It directly connects to the audience and shows you the steriotypes linked with the teens.
Props As far as props go, I feel like the use of the virtual reality headset and the Samsung Galaxy S6 was very modern and new. The idea of modern and new has been used to express the views which teenagers feel towards these new technologies as teenagers are now getting into virtual reality and good phones. I feel like the use of this has represented the particular social group as tech savvy and adventurous. I say adventurous as this teen is willing to explore a whole new reality (within the films narrative) in the comfort of his bedroom. These connotations of technology are often represented in modern fils about teenagers as the idea of tech in youth culture has grown exponentially fast in this ever-growing world of the internet.
