Reasons For Migration

  • Farming wasn't popular anymore
  • More job opportunities in urban cities
  • Cities were centers of the economy

Working Conditions

  • 6 days a week
  • 16 hours a day
  • Many kids worked in factories
  • Many diseases were caught such as lung diseases
  • Very large equipment to lift, hard for workers

People's Living Areas

  • About 75% to 80% lived in urban areas.
  • About 20% to 25% lived in rural areas.

Women and Children

  • Almost the same jobs as men
  • Over time were given more leniency, shorter hours 
  • Children responsible to use dangerous machines
  • Women did both domestic work and factory work

Social Classes

  • 3 Main Classes: Upper, Middle, and Low
  • Upper: Factory owners, managers. Successful
  • Middle: Businessmen and other officials.
  • Low: Factory workers, Laborers

Labor Unions

  • Wanted better working conditions
  • Strived to be publicly involved 
  • Were never very successful
