Growing Up in Cuba

BY: Rose Maldonado

Hi, I'm Rose Maldonado. I was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Growing up in Cuba my family wasn't the richest because the monthly wage was only around forty dollars per person. Cuba's economy is incredibly poor, but my family made it through until we emigrated a few months ago.

My family consists of my mom and dad, my older brother and I. We now live in a suburb in Miami, Florida where we are still free to embrace our culture with other Cuban immigrants. I'm so excited about being in America because I now get the opportunity to run my own business where in Cuba I didn't because of the economy.

I'm very proud of my culture as is my family. We were all raised Catholic, the main religion of Cuba, so my family attends mass weekly at a local cathedral. We all speak Spanish at home and with close friends because it's our first language.

My favorite uncle, Danilo, is in jail in Cuba. He was arrested because spray-painted the names, Fidel and Raul on two pigs. Raul Castro is our current president of the communist state we live in. It was unfair that my uncle was arrested without a trial, but it happens when you basically have one man running an entire country.
