30 Book Challenge

This year we are going to challenge ourselves as readers by reading 30 books before June 16th. That’s right, 30 books!

On this reading journey we will be reading, celebrating reading, sharing what we read with each other, and keeping a record of what we read in Accelerated Reader and in our journals.

In order to fulfill the 30 Books By June Challenge, you will need to read many kinds of books.

What Kinds of Books Will I Read?

Fiction (12)

  • 3 Historical Fiction
  • 3 Realistic Fiction
  • 2 Science Fiction
  • 2 Fantasy
  • 1 Classic
  • 1Mystery

Non-fiction (7)

  • 3 Biography, Autobiography, or Memoir
  • 4 Informational

Poetry/Award/Graphic (5)

  • 1 Poetry
  • 2 Award Winner
  • 2 Graphic Novels (fiction or non-fiction)

Choice Book (6)

  • To give us a greater sense of freedom, we'll also be able to read 6 books of our choice and count it towards challenge

What if a book covers more than one genre?

--Two books a year may be counted for two genres.

How long does my book need to be?

--Your book should be at least 80 pages (unless it is a graphic novel). Please talk to me if you want to read a book that is less than 80 pages.

What if my book is REALLY Long?

--If your book is longer than 350 pages, it may count as two books!

How will I find good books in genres that I don’t usually read?

  • Visit your local, school, or classroom library
  • Ask a friend
  • Look at the Recommended Reading List
  • Wait to hear a book talk from Ms. Travaille or the librarian

Will a whole class novel or literature circle book count as one of my 30 books?

YES!

  • When you pass an AR quiz, you'll record your book on the 30 Books Challenge page in your composition book

Important!

  • You will earn a SBP and HOW grade at the end of each month based on your progress. You’ll need to read at least 3 books each month to meet the goal by the end of the school year.

  • A passing quiz is considered 70%
  • Books must also be just right--not too hard, not too easy.
